Artist Feature: Dyala Moshtaha
As cliche as it sounds, I’ve been creative ever since I can remember. In a way, I always knew that this is what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing. I was never really passionate about anything else as much as I was about art and design, so why would I spend my life doing something I didn’t really love? This is my passion and I plan on using my creativity to make a difference in this world.
Plunging into the art world professionally is a very nerve-racking process. People are either going to love or hate your work, and as an artist you need to have confidence in yourself and your talent, and be able to push yourself outside your comfort zone. Social media plays a huge role in our society today, and developing an Instagram page to showcase your work as an artist requires a lot of effort and patience. Staying active and interacting with artists is a very vital part in spreading your work and reaching a larger audience. Putting out content regularly can be challenging sometimes, but it’s all worth it in the end, because my goal is to share my work with people all over the world.
I want people to feel excited and inspired when they see my work. I create things I picture in my mind and find motivation throughout my daily life, like: things I come across, and people I interact with. As a multi-media artist, I love to explore different mediums and see where that takes me and my work. Living in the digital age, my most recent works have all been developed digitally. I let my imagination take over and put down whatever comes to mind, then work from there.
As a Palestinian artist, I definitely feel a responsibility to use my platform to bring light to ongoing conflicts and express my emotions towards it in a beautiful way. Art is my passion, and my country is my passion, so combining these two aspects of my life is something that excites me and motivates me to do more. My work is a reflection of who I am as an individual, and I feel as though it is important to represent those who feel like their voices may not always be heard. I want people to look at my work and see the beauty and relevance of who they are and where they come from. I feel like its our global duty to show support and unite in times of need. I feel like my work showcases the importance of acceptance as well as being inclusive. Given the world we live in today, with people being bombarded with an unrealistic digital society, my art plays a role in breaking those boundaries, and redefining those expectations.
I have always created work about Palestine. Even when I was younger and starting out, I always found myself working on pieces that expressed my emotions towards Palestine. My favourite piece at the moment would definitely be “My Map”, which was actually inspired by another artist. I used the concept and gave it my own twist and came up with something I am extremely proud of, and that is when I realised that my best work comes from something that has a cause and speaks towards important issues.
